LED face mask routine for beginners

LED Face Mask Routine for Beginners: When and How to Use It

New to LED face masks? The routine is simpler than most guides make it sound. The single most important rule: your device's manual decides the session length, frequency and skin preparation, because different masks have different requirements. This guide shows where a mask usually fits in your routine, how to choose morning or evening, and the beginner mistakes to avoid.

Before your first session

  • Charge the mask fully.
  • Read the manual for your exact model: session time, how often, eye protection, cleaning.
  • Check who should avoid LED light therapy, especially if you take medication that increases light sensitivity or have a skin condition.

A simple routine for most masks

If your mask needs clean, dry, bare skin (most do), this order works:

  1. Remove makeup and cleanse. If you wear heavy makeup or sunscreen, cleanse twice.
  2. Pat skin dry.
  3. Put on the mask and adjust the straps so it sits comfortably. Wear eye protection if the manual says so.
  4. Choose a mode and run the session for the time in the manual. Don't extend it.
  5. Apply your skincare afterwards: serum, then moisturiser.
  6. In the morning, finish with sunscreen. An LED session doesn't replace sun protection.

If your manual gives a different order, follow that instead.

Before or after serum?

For masks that need bare skin, serum goes after the session. Don't apply a new product before a session unless the manual approves it.

Morning or evening?

Either works. Pick the time you can stick to. Evening often fits naturally after removing makeup; morning works if you have ten quiet minutes before your daytime skincare.

How often?

Follow your manual. Don't copy a schedule written for a different device, and don't add extra or longer sessions to speed things up. More isn't better with light devices.

What about retinol, acids and acne treatments?

There's no universal rule. Follow the warnings on both your device and your skincare. If you use prescription skincare, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether an LED mask is suitable.

Cleaning and storing your mask

  • Wipe the inside with a soft, slightly damp cloth after each use.
  • Never submerge it in water.
  • Store it clean and dry, away from direct sunlight.

Beginner mistakes to avoid

  • Using another mask's timing for yours.
  • Applying products before a session without checking the manual.
  • Making sessions longer or more frequent than directed.
  • Skipping eye protection when it's required.
  • Carrying on when skin or eyes feel uncomfortable. Stop and seek advice instead.

What to expect

Be wary of anyone promising results by a set week. Results vary, home devices are less powerful than clinic equipment, and the evidence for any particular mask is limited. For persistent acne, redness or scarring, see a dermatologist. To understand the science, read how red light therapy works for skin.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear makeup during a session?

If your mask needs bare skin, remove makeup first.

Can I use it every day?

Only if your manual says so. Daily use isn't right for every device.

Can I use it with my eyes open?

Follow the manual's eye-protection guidance. Close your eyes and use goggles if they're supplied or recommended.
